This Cat Mask Design is worked in a Metalic Purple Fabric with soft gold vinyl fabric.

In the end I decided to omit the feather shapes drawn into the original sketch. The mask is just too large to add them. As it is you need a wall 12 to 16 feet high for the mask to look good.

Sketch of Cat Mask with Grid Overlayed

The easiest way to enlarge large projects is to use an overhead projector. Trace the sketch on to a sheet of clear plastic and project it onto a wall with paper on it. Just trace the image and you're done.

If you don't have access to an overhead projector over lay the sketch with a 1/2" grid.

I have over laid this sketch with a 1/2" grid but because the image is large the grid appears smaller than it does in the Fantasy Mask.

Use Grid to Enlarge Mask

In order to make the mask about 6 feet wide, the grid on the newspaper needs to be 5 1/2 inch squares.

Next I cut out the paper pattern pieces, and drew them on to the denim fabric that I am using for a backing.

I added 2 inches to the pieces that will be gold on the edges that lap behind the purple piece.

I used the denim backing as patterns to cut the quilt backing and the face fabrics. I stitched all around the three layers using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Pieces with Bias Tape Added

This shows the pieces for the Cat Mask Hanging with the bias tape added.

The purple piece: I used a dark purple satin to accent the lighter metallic purple fabric. Cut in 3 inch strips cut on the bias.

The gold piece: I tested the stretch properties for the vinyl fabric and decided that it stretched the most when cut horizontally. I cut these strips 2 3/4 inches wide. They are narrower because the fabric does not fray and does not need to be turned under at the back.

To finish the mask, over lap the purple shape over the gold and hand stitch them together. Be sure to use a thimble. I didn't use one until my fingers hurt too much. You would think I would know better.

Make up the gold eye brow accent piece.
I enlarged it on a separate piece of paper using the 5 1/2 inch squares. Then cut it out using the denim backing, the quilt fabric and the gold vinyl and finished it with the gold bias tape.

Baubles for Eye Brow Decoration

The beads are hand sewn onto a back ground of metallic purple vinyl. The vinyl is a good choice because it doesn't fray. If I were to do it again I would use 2 layer of the vinyl to make it stiffer.

These beads tend to roll, so I needed to stitch up through the back to catch their stitching thread and hold it in place.

The beading is held in place by sewing up through the back ground and then a sequin, and a bead and then back down.

Bauble for Center of Mask

This is two layers of purple metallic vinyl fabric, with sew on beads and another bead in the center to pin piece in place.
