This skirt was so ugly some one gave it to me to get rid of it. The horizontal trim was bright white and cut the skirt into pieces and not in pleasant places. Unfortunately this was one project I did before I planned this website and I didn't take a before picture.
The mixed prints had no cohesive quality in either colour or character. Some were soft and romantic, others belonged in a kitchen print, and some were bold and Hawaiian in character. They had no common qualities, what so ever.
These qualities made it a perfect project to experiment with. It was so ugly, there was nothing to lose if it completely messed up. Dye is something to play with when there is nothing to lose.
Over dyeing would give a cohesiveness to the colour that would over ride all the rest of the incongruities.
Choosing a colour in this case was based on personal preference rather than the piece itself. I did look it over and contemplated what it would look like with the blues and greens enhanced and the pinks, reds and oranges muted.
I've included a colour wheel to show the relationships between colours. Over Dyeing used the same colour theory as mixing colours for painting pictures.
Colour Opposite each other on the colour wheel are Complementary Colours, and when they are mixed tend to bring each other closer to brown or black depending on the proportions.
Colour Beside each other on the colour wheel are Analagous Colours, and when they are mixed create colours half way between the two colours you are mixing.
