Hand Stitches for Embroidery

Stem Stitch

Stem Stitch is used for thin lines of solid stitching such as the stems of plants, hence it's name stem stitch.

Felt Christmas Tree Ornament using Stem Stitch

I used the Stem Stitch to create a delicate Scroll Pattern on this Christmas Tree Ornament.

Stem Stitch

Come up from the back at the start of your line. Stitch down just over from where you started and come back up through the same hole that you started with.

This is where you determine your stitch length for this line of stitching because you will want the stitches to look even and you will need to match this distance for all the stitches in the rest of the line.

Stem Stitch

Repeat the stitches making each one the same size as the first until you've finished the line of stitches.

Stem Stitch

Stitch down when you reach the end of your stitch line.

Stem Stitch
