Here are my 2 favorite ways to stiffen crochet snowflakes.
The easiest one to use if you need a light stiffener is to spray the crochet piece with a spray starch. Remove excess water without wringing, then stretch on a piece of cardboard with straight pins.
Sugar & Water
If I need a very stiff method for very delicate pieces I use the old fashioned sugar and water method that my grandmother would have used. This is really the best way to get crisp, stiff snowflakes.
Mix 2 parts of sugar to 1 part of water. Bring to a boil gently on the stove. Don't use a microwave, it is too difficult to heat it, keeping it mixed without over heating it.
Remove excess water using a paper towel without wringing. Stretch on a piece cardboard to give the final shape to your project.
The final look of the finished project depends as much on the way that it is shaped as it does on the pattern that you have used.
