Beading Techniques

Couching a String of Beads

This is an example of a Christmas Tree Ornament which I have used couching to place strings of beads.

Copper Heart Christmas Tree Ornament using Couching

This is one of those times that I wish that I'd done this set of instructions first. It is beneficial to know what mistakes to avoid and where to be more careful.

I did try to see how it would work to do a curved line. It does not!! It is virtually impossible to achieve a smooth curved line. Oh Well!

Start Couching a String of Beads

Start by bringing the thread up from the back of the fabric and string the desired number of beads on your thread. It is important not to get too many beads for the length of line you want to make.

Do what I say not what I do. If you look at the ornament above, I could have been a little more careful.

 Couching a String of Beads

Stitch down where you want the bead line to end, and come up in the centre of the line 3 beads from the end. You need to be careful to come up between the 3rd. & 4th. bead. The line puckers if you are off.

Stitch down on the other side of the thread holding the beads, so that the couching thread falls betweens the beads.

Finish Couching a String of Beads

Finished line of Couching.
