Gilt Harlequin Ball

Harlequin Ball, Felt Christmas Tree Ornament

Craft Supplies:

Cut 8 circular pieces of felt, 4 green ones and 4 red ones, 3 inches in diameter.

At first, I tried it with smaller circles and I did not like the effect so I redid it using the 3" circles.

I sewed a row of blanket stitch around each of the circles using a metalic gold thread.

I stacked the circles, alternating the colours. I also lined up the ends of the blanket stitch so that they would be at to centre.

Six Circles with Gold Blanket Stitch

Next I hand stitched through all 8 layers, down the centre line of the circles. I made the stitches very tight which helped the sides flare out to make the ball.

I used a gold bead and sequin to join the middle points. I started with the two red ones and worked my way around the ball joining red and green layers.

Half way between the middle line and the top and bottom centres I made another line of joins, taking one from each of the pairs in the centre joins. I used the gold bead and sequin to finish them.

I added gold seed beads, with a red accent bead to the thread I used for hanging the ornament.
