Praire Sampler Inspired
Catalpa Flowers Ornament

This Catalpa Flowers Ornament is one of a set of Counted Cross Stitch Christmas Tree Ornaments inspired by the patterns found in a Praire Cross Stitch Sampler. The original sampler would have been influenced by the traditoinal American weavers use of large overshot patterns such as the Catalpa Flowers.

The back is is done with a Burgandy, coarse weave fabric similar in color to the Garnet Embroidery Floss and the ruffle is hunter green grossgrain ribbon.

Instructions:

Click the download button and print the counted cross stitch pattern for this ornament. Embroider using Standard Counted Cross Stitch Technique on a 4 1/2" square piece of 11 count aida cloth.

To Finish:

I finished the edges by gathering a length Gross Grain Ribbon with two lines of stitching, stitched first to the facing layer and then the the back layer.

I love the effect but I have to admit that it was pretty finicky to get the gathers to lay right. If I was to do this project again I would take a long look at pregathered lace finishes, to see if there was something around that I liked as much. Once I start something I tend to finish it, but it still makes me think about other choices. If I found that I still liked the Ribbon Finish best, I would still go with it, because I would be cranky to make an easier choice and not be satisfied with the finished project.
